From spring till autumn, the so-called Roman Beach (Római part) in Budapest is a favoured riverside area among the city’s inhabitants. Families with children or water sport-lovers seeking recreation come to this unique spot of the capital, where also Egis’ water sport complex is located. The Roman Beach owns its special atmosphere due to the unusual closeness of nature within a city: the natural sandy beach, free access to the river and the tree giants along the riverbank, tolerating the special conditions characteristic for flood plains are not a common sight in a city of this size. However, due to human activity and time these trees are more vulnerable to illnesses and pesticides than their counterparts living in undisturbed areas. As mature trees are often home to a vast number of living creatures (insects, birds, small mammals etc.) their timely replenishment is important to maintain biodiversity so that planted saplings can smoothly replace the ill, decaying and with time structurally weaker trees. The initiative our team took part in, was aimed exactly at assisting this smooth process.
Our colleagues received some pieces of advice on how to plant the grafted ash trees that came from a tree nursery. When selecting the saplings, it was important to choose tree species that are highly flood-tolerant and harmonize well with the existing  ecosystem. We were happy to see how many of our colleagues joined this action voluntarily. It demonstrates that at Egis preserving and supporting biodiversity and protecting our environment are important matters at all levels.
