The event, held in Budapest on the 26th of November 2024, was attended by representatives of the government and pharmaceutical companies, as well as Adrian van den Hoven, Director General of Medicines for Europe. During the roundtable discussion, Csaba Poroszlai, CEO of Egis and Vice President of MAGYOSZ, highlighted that politics can support the growth of the sector through the quality of domestic and European regulations, impacting export volumes. Currently, European competitiveness is hindered by the noticeable difference compared to the Far East. Therefore, Csaba Poroszlai advocated for some form of regulatory alignment mechanism.

During the conference, MAGYOSZ and Deloitte presented their joint study on the economic significance of domestic pharmaceutical manufacturers. One key finding is that the gross added value per employee in the pharmaceutical industry is exceptionally high, amounting to HUF 24.6 million per person (based on 2022 data), compared to HUF 12.1 million in vehicle manufacturing and HUF 8.2 million in the food and beverage sector. The sector also stands out for its export orientation and strong R&D activities: the R&D expenditure per employee in pharmaceutical manufacturing is about ten times the average in the manufacturing industry. The role of domestic manufacturers in primary care is also indispensable: over the past decade (2014-2024), the proportion of domestically produced medicines purchased from pharmacies has consistently exceeded 50%, meaning that every second patient in primary care is treated with a product from a MAGYOSZ member company.

At the end of the event, the Dr. István Orbán Memorial Medals were awarded. This year, the award was received by György Miklós Keserű, PhD, Széchenyi Prize-winning researcher, Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, candidate of chemical sciences, university professor, and József Nemes, co-founder, CEO, and Director of Commerce and Marketing of ExtractumPharma Zrt.

(Boxed text) Dr. István Orbán Memorial Medal: The Hungarian Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (MAGYOSZ) established the memorial medal in 2009 to recognize outstanding contributions to the development of the domestic pharmaceutical industry. The award is named after Dr. István Orbán, the founding president of MAGYOSZ and former CEO of Egis. The award can be given for scientific, economic, social, or public service activities, work, or lifetime achievements that have significantly contributed, directly or indirectly, to the recognition, reputation, and strengthening of the Hungarian pharmaceutical industry both domestically and internationally.
